DPC vs DBC vs AMB: What Are the Differences?
DPC, DBC, and AMB are widely used ceramic metallization and substrate technologies in power electronics, semiconductor packaging, and high-performance electronic applications. Although all three technologies combine ceramic materials with conductive metal layers, their manufacturing processes and advantages are different.
DPC (Direct Plated Copper) uses deposition, photolithography, and electroplating processes to create precise copper circuits on ceramic substrates. Its major advantage is high pattern accuracy, making it suitable for fine-line circuits and applications requiring flexible circuit design.
DBC (Direct Bonded Copper) bonds copper foil directly to ceramic substrates at high temperatures. It provides excellent thermal conductivity, electrical insulation, and current-carrying capability, making it widely used in power modules and industrial electronics.
AMB (Active Metal Brazing) uses active brazing alloys to create a strong bond between copper and ceramic materials. It offers excellent mechanical strength and thermal cycling reliability, making it particularly suitable for high-power and demanding applications such as EV power modules and SiC devices.
The optimal technology depends on circuit precision, thermal requirements, mechanical strength, operating environment, and application requirements.
